I don't think she's either happy or sad about it. I think Tina put Ike behind her when she got away from him and his abuse. That was not an easy to do. Everyday women who are battered wives have a tough road to travel, and because she was in the public eye it was even tougher for her. When she got out from under Ike, she left with NOTHING but 35 cents and a gas credit card. She struggled through the years, and no one gave her anything on a silver platter. That lady EARNED all the good things she has...and I hope she continues to have even more good things happen for her.
Tina deserves a LOT of credit for getting out of that situation and moving on with her life. She has not said ANYTHING negative about Ike. She basically spoke the truth about what happened to her. He beat her. She left. End of story.
If you read the NY Times and the world's papers today, you will see that her press office released a statement saying that Tina is aware that Ike has passsed away, that she had not had any contact with him in over 30 years, and that no further statements will be made.
Apart from writing the book "I, Tina", she has consistenly refused to answer questions about him in interviews, and she has consistently kept her silence re: any feelings positive or negative toward Ike ... and my prediction is that she will not all of a sudden develop all these "sentimental" feelings about him. She will more than likely continue to remain silent and move on with her life... just like millions of other people who leave bad and abusive relationships behind.
FACT: While Ike Turner may have been innovative when it came to music, he was NOT a good person otherwise. He was an egocentric, a narcissist, an unrepentant drug addict, a serial cheater and sadistic abuser of women..and also in SERIOUS denial of all of those things!
Don't believe me? here is a quote from his autobiography published in 2001 that establishes that:
"Sure, I've slapped Tina... There have been times when I punched her to the ground without thinking. But I never beat her."
WTF?
He also told the Los Angeles Times in a 1999 interview that never did anything wrong and wasn't ashamed of what he did.
and still you say don't speak ill of the "dead?"
Well, as a feminist and an activist re: domestic violence when I think of the fact that 1 in 4 women are killed by an intimate partner, I say that hell isn't good enough for the likes of Ike Turner or any other abuser. Ike Turner should not be lionized in any way, shape or form just because he is no longer alive!
If anything, his death should bring more awareness for the need to do something about domestic/intimate partner violence that is still happening to women worldwide.
If anyone talks ill of "the dead" i.e. Ike Turner, then as far as I'm concerned he deserves it. Why start backpedaling now? Just because someone dies, it doesn't suddenly erase all of their wrongs. When Hitler or Jeffrey Dahmner or any other criminal or evil person died, are people quick to forgive them and forget...or to expect their victims to act like nothing went down???
No woman in her right mind would stick up for that individual...regardless of his legacy in music!
If you don't agree, then go ahead and thumb me down or report me. Someone did it yesterday...because they don't believe in freeedom of speech! Moreover, anyone who does that is just doing it because they can't handle the TRUTH!!!
