........when he is dead? .
You need to say "He was".
As in the Monty Python 'Parrot Sketch' he is a stiff, gone to meet his maker, pushing up the daisies. He is an ex-MJ.

Well, his music still exists, it is a part of him. Something that he created from his heart and his mind. Although MJ as a person doesn't exist, his spirit lives on in his music. He still IS the king of pop and his music still IS pretty good
Either that or he is alive :P

Because it hurts to much, to say that he's dead and on the grammar side you can't really say "was dead" because he hasn't been dead that long, so MJ is..... MJ is dead, is more appropriate, no matter how much I hate saying it.....

You have no idea how much your question hurts - you are being overly insensitive.
Michael IS the King Of Pop.
Michael DOES have great music.
Michael IS a dancing legend.
Michael IS influencial to many other artists.
Not WAS, or HAS BEEN, or DID, but IS. His magic will always exist.
There is a difference between a joke, and being nasty and this question crosses the line.

Yes he's dead, but he is still the King of Pop. Present.
He still holds the record for the best selling album of all time. Present.
Still holds the record as the most philanthropic celebrity in history. Present.
Good day.

He IS the King of Pop.
He IS the contender of the most sold album of all time
He IS an inspiration to all(What,if he was an inspiration, that would mean people used to look up to him,but people still look up to him!).
If we were using was,it would say,"He WAS alive from 1958-2009".

Because Michael still IS the King Of Pop.
Michael still IS the holder of top-selling album.
And Michael still IS the best.
You can't put was in the place of is in those situations.

They probably still feel his presence, and as long as records are selling and being played, there is still a 'Michael Jackson,' just not really the person; its the people behind him

Because nobody wants to admit that he's really dead, especially not his hardcore fans. For them, he is still very much alive in their memories.

I will never be able to bring myself to use past tense it is much too painful. Plus he is forever alive in my heart.

What like 'MJ IS dead'. You can't say he WAS dead.

Does it really bother you that much?
I'm sure there are other things you should worry about.

2009-10-17 13:46:35 UTC
Because we don't want to say "was" because it hurts to say that.
He is still alive in our hearts.
