Why did David Bowie dress like a woman when he was younger?

I know there's a kind of style called "glam rock" or whatever, like those 80s rockers who wore make up. But with David Bowie, it's much more. In his earlier videos he basically wears stuff that a woman might wear. What's that all about?

he wanted to stick out, he basically invented that style. It worked since it got him a lot of attention and controversy. Some other early glam singers kinda copped that look like Gary Glitter and Marc Bolan. The 80s glam metal guys kinda dressed girly but not as much but many people dont know all those 80s hair metal guys had their clothes designed by one guy and thats why they all look alike like Motley Crue, Poison, Ratt, Dokken etc
