Easily, the fact is , everybody knew MJ, everybody knew his music and anyone could listen to and enjoy his music, that's what makes a musician , not their private life !

Well, know that we're all being stereotyped as idiots who don't know anything about music or other artists throughout history... I'm an accomplished musician and songwriter and believe Michael was certainly the best entertainer of his generation and probably the century. The impact his work had on society, the lives he changed with his music, the video landscape he helped create, the moves and voice that inspired a new generation of artists, and the doors he broke down for African Americans can't be denied. Most of the other artists you mentioned didn't have anywhere near the record sales Michael had because his music affected a global audience and thus was heard by a far greater number of people which made a big impact. No one is denying the talent of everyone you listed and obviously there are great musical artists throughout the history of the world who have inspired people nonetheless and certainly also inspired Michael Jackson. It's not a competition, all of these people had unique gifts to contribute and their influence took us all to new places. A large group of people who have been most inspired by Michael's work happen to be other artists and musicians and these people all have the knowledge of all the other musicians and masters that came before. As for 'hype', numbers speak for themselves, as do the number of people who came forth in the industry all citing that they wouldn't have become entertainers were it not for his influence. They are all great and I'm not in a position to judge who was better than another, it's like judging apples and oranges, it can't be done. But I personally think he was THE entertainer of the century, taking into account that most of the other folks mentioned had one or two specialties whereas he was a master of ENTERTAINMENT, period, on multiple levels, all highly influential. However, that's just my opinion and everyone is entitled to their own.

He was many things, but not the greatest musician that ever lived. A great innovator, dancer, stylist, performer, singer, writer etc...

I say in his era the most successful, but not the greatest ever. He was known throughout the world and loved as were the Beatles and Elvis. Isn't it's all a matter of taste?

Anyway can you call a singer a musician? i don't recall seeing him at the piano or on the guitar.

Some people will say he is...

But i think that nobody can say who the greatest musician is because thats an opionion and not everybody will have the same opinion so nobody can officially say he is.

Watching to the numbers of CD's he sold : 700 000 000 CD's in total.

And the number 'Thriller' is still the best sold number in the whole world for like 1 200 000.

So I think he's kinda famous, don't you think?

I would say people like Mozart, Bach and Rachmaninov deserve more recognition musically but that's just what I prefer.

not by a long shot, yes he was a great performer but much of his act depended on the use of special effects and gimmicks
